The variable AC test supply G99 Annex A.7.1.2.2 describes, with the absorbed power returned to the grid rather than dissipated.
G99 type verification asks you to step voltage in increments of 0.5% or less, hold past the trip delay, then jump in one step and measure trip time — and to do it repeatedly, across settings, with the module running. That is a duty cycle, not a demonstration. Regeneration is what makes it affordable to run all day: the energy the module pushes back goes to the grid instead of into a load bank and a room full of heat.
400 Hz ground power for airborne equipment test.
Aircraft electrical equipment runs at 400 Hz and a 50 Hz bench cannot pretend otherwise. UK aerospace programmes and their MOD-facing subcontracts need a source that holds the frequency and the waveform while the DUT misbehaves.

Most AC test does not need four-quadrant behaviour. It needs an accurate, programmable, repeatable source and a sequencer that will reproduce the same profile in six months when the auditor asks.

Def Stan 61-005 Part 6 asks for 9 to 36 V operation on nominal 12 V and 24 V platform systems, and for the DIT08.B load dump: a loose battery terminal on a heavily loaded system. You cannot generate that profile by turning a knob. It needs arbitrary transient sequencing and a source that survives producing it.

Production test is a throughput problem before it is a measurement problem. The constraint nobody writes into the standard is that the test has to be repeatable at line speed, not merely correct on a bench.
Cycling and characterisation for cells, modules and packs.
The EV Smart Charge Points Regulations 2021 require a technical file containing test reports for charge points sold in Great Britain. Battery and charging test programmes generate exactly those reports, and they have to be defensible when a purchaser asks to see the file.
